We received the following response:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you to the Bradford Cycle Campaign for the response to the Kings Road Connect Project briefing that I shared with you.
I would like to take this opportunity to reply as below if you could share with the group:
• Prioritise Cycling at Junctions: Cycle lanes must be given priority at all junctions. Clear and uninterrupted flow is essential to encourage cycling as a practical alternative to driving.
- Cycle tracks are proposed off the main road from Five Lane Ends roundabout through to the NCN66 tie-in at Valley Road. At key junctions, cyclists are given clear priority using parallel crossings, which allow both cyclists and pedestrians to cross safely. At minor side roads, the design includes continuous footways and cycleways that help maintain a clear, uninterrupted route, encouraging vehicles to give way to cyclists and pedestrians.
• Avoid Diversions and Inconveniences: Cycle lanes should not be diverted or compromised to accommodate parking. Adequate space must be provided to prevent “dooring” incidents, and the route should be designed to minimise unnecessary bends and wobbles that impede journey times. Treat the cycle route as a vital transport artery, not a recreational afterthought.
- In our design, all proposed cycle tracks run parallel to the carriageway without any significant diversions, ensuring a straightforward and efficient route for cyclists. Additionally, adequate spacing as per LTN 1/20 has been incorporated to prevent “dooring” incidents when the cycleway runs adjacent to parking bays, enhancing safety for all users.
• Surface Quality: The surface finish of the cycle lane must be of a high standard. Recent experiences in Bingley and Bradford City Centre have highlighted the negative impact of poor surface quality on rider comfort and safety. We urge you to ensure a smooth, durable surface that is suitable for everyday commuting.
- Agreed. High standard, smooth and durable surface will be provided.
• Clearance and Obstruction Prevention: Implement double yellow lines or other appropriate measures in areas where parked vehicles might obstruct cycle and pedestrian flow. This is crucial for maintaining clear and safe passage for all users.
- Agreed. Preventive measures will be implemented where necessary.
Kind Regards
