Thursday and Friday 11th/12th May mark the prestigious “Cycle City, Active City” Conference in Bradford City Centre, with over 500 delegates from all across the UK and worldwide converging on our city to discuss, to share information and experiences, to learn and to inspire. It’s a timely occasion, with the recent launch of the government’s “Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy” (CWIS) and huge ramifications associated with the need to encourage active lifestyles and improve urban air quality and thus health in general. Given the huge impact of the TdY and the development of Bradford and of Yorkshire as a Capital of Cycling, there is also emphasis on the economic benefits of cycling and active living in all of its aspects.

As the TdY also showed, it’s also all about fun and enjoyment, and the party continues this week in Bradford via two events. On Thursday evening, 11th May, marking the halfway point of the Cycle City, Active City Conference, there’s an impromptu “Party in City Park”! Everyone is invited down on bike and on foot to enjoy a Bicycle Ballet (with performances involving cyclists from Bradford Disability Sport & Leisure), a pedal-powered cinema and, to finish off the evening, local cyclists rock band “53-10” accompanied by lights, fountains and lasers which are part of the world-class City Park offer. A great evening to let your hair down and enjoy a good night out! All free, and open to all ages. It all starts from about 7.30pm onward. Plenty of restaurants and bars, including of course the fantastic Sunbridge Wells complex, to enjoy!.

  • May 11th: “Cycle City, Active City, Bradford” Conference Day 1 (www.landor.co.uk/cyclecitybradford) – Evening Cycling, Bike Ballet, Bike-in Cinema, “Party in the Park” (City Park)
  • May 12th: “Cycle City, Active City, Bradford” Conference Day 2 – City Park Cycling Activities and Market Place (Launch of the updated Bradford Cycling Strategy planned at the conference)

And, once recovered from that, on Sunday 14th May from 11am onward it’s the Bradford City Cycle – Bradford’s own mass participation ride that’s again open to everyone to come along and enjoy cycling on closed roads in and around Bradford City Centre.

Bradford Cycle Campaign will be presenting a workshop at 3:45-5:00 about the background, objectives and challenges for the campaign.  Slides will be posted here soon.
